Withings Contactless Thermometer: The Convenience Every Mother Needs

The other day a colleague of mine came in after a 3-day gap, her hair looked unwashed and she was clearly sleep deprived. As she wobbled into her seat and tried to get her bearings right, I hopped over to her cubicle to inquire how she was feeling, since I obviously assumed she had taken a medical leave, given you know, how disheveled she was looking. 

To my surprise, she was feeling quite well. Minus of course the exhaustion. As it turns out both of her three-year-old twins were down with some viral infection and between two kids, a nanny that was on leave and a husband that was away on a work trip, the poor thing had a lot to juggle at home. 

Thankfully her twins were doing better, but as it turns out the biggest nightmare for her was checking their fever regularly. One of the twins didn’t want to keep it under his arm, or would move too much. One of them was seemingly terrified of having it put in the ear. She said the two most draining things were definitely checking the fever and then administering the medicine.

It took me back to the time my eldest two were growing up and my daughter too would be so difficult about thermometer reading. Thankfully by the time my third had arrived, we had officially migrated to digital thermometers that had made life easier.  But two years ago when the entire family fell victim to covid and I was on round-the-clock duty caring for the kids and running from one room to another, I realized I couldn’t use the same thermometer for the whole family. That’s when after a quick search, I had purchased the Withings Contactless Thermometer and even though I had gotten it during a COVID stint, it had become a constant in the family ever since because it’s a no touch forehead thermometer and was best and safe during COVID.

I obviously recommended the same to my colleague and even though she was taken aback by the hundred dollars plus price point, with twins, I knew this was going to be the convenience she so desperately needed, and hopefully once she used it would not have any post purchase dissonance. 

Non-Contact Digital Thermometer – Reading: 

Since I purchased the digital thermometer during the covid phase, the contactless feature was the top selling point for me. 

It meant all I needed to do was swipe it close to the forehead and the infrared indicators would light up telling me the exact temperature. Since it was completely contactless and did not require touching the skin at all, it was the most hygienic option I could think of during the time which was also extremely quick and noninvasive. After every use though, just as a safety precaution, I wiped it down with a sanitized napkin just for safe measure. 

I was certain that if I found such good use of it for my pre-teen children, my colleague with toddlers who kept moving nonstop, would greatly benefit from this feature. 

High Accuracy:

Being generally traditional with technology, and having a hard time adjusting to newer gadgets, I was lowkey concerned about the accuracy of the non-mercury, contactless feature. But Withing’s thermometer comes equipped with sixteen infrared signals that read the body’s core temperature through the temporal artery. Then reading the thermometer to show the results takes about two seconds in total. 

I had decided to test the thermometer out once as well and took my own temperature both with Withing’s as well as the regular mercury thermometer and an extra digital thermometer that we had at home. Interestingly the accuracy of the Withing’s was seemingly the best. Once I had done the at-home test, I essentially stopped using all other models we previously had at home. 

Supportive App: 

The device comes with a free app that one can install on their phones. It’s compatible with both Android and iOS which means both me and my husband, who use different ecosystems of software could install the app and keep track of the children’s fever history. All you have to do is connect the smart thermometer to the WIFI and Once the temperature is taken, it automatically synchronizes with the app. The log is then available for viewing straightaway, while also keeping the record for later access. 

However, synchronization with the app is not essential for using the device or viewing the temperature. Unlike many smart products that make it essential to view readings on the supportive app, the Withings Thermo smart temporal thermometer can also be used independently without the app. 

This means it becomes a great travel-friendly tool where you can carry it along in your medical kit on camping trips and digital detox vacations where you are out of WIFI vicinity, and still be able to use the gadget seamlessly. 

Multiple User Feature: 

• The thermometer can store details of up to 8 unique users independently.
•  This feature allows each family member to have their medical data tracked separately in the app.
• No need for a separate thermometer for each user.
• The thermometer also offers a guest mode.
• Guest mode enables contactless and hygienic temperature readings.
• Ideal for when visitors like my sister with her baby need to use it.
• The baby’s data is added in guest mode without affecting regular user details.

While the Withings thermo is essentially marketed towards infants because they move so much and it’s hard to get their temperature, I personally found it to be a more multifunctional product that was suited to people of all age groups.

All four of my children, the youngest being 5 comfortably use the gadget and my husband uses it too. I believe it’s designed in a way that’s suited to serve the needs of the entire family.
