The Overwhelming First Night as a Mother

I remember my first night as a mother. The surgery had battered me. I couldn’t move without agonizing pain. Nobody had prepared me for exactly how hard nursing was going to be and I was struggling more than I could express. And in the midst of all this, when my brain was both overwhelmed and sleep deprived, every time the nurse entered the room and asked ‘When did the baby feed last?’ ‘How long has he been sleeping for?’ – felt like a moment I wanted to pull my hair out.

It was the first reality check on how becoming a mother meant absolutely no break, for the rest of your life, in any and all matters of the child, right down to – yeah, keeping track of their feedings, diaper changes, and nap times. The expectation that I was supposed to go from the operating table to a semi-efficient record keeper was shocking, to say the least.

God bless my own mother who was with me and it wasn’t her first rodeo at the hospital, so she had a little handy notebook and would note the time for every little activity we did with the baby. Based off of that, she would remind me a few minutes before feeding time that ‘so much time has passed’ in anticipation of preparing for the next feeding cycle.

Navigating Motherhood with a Baby Chart and the Challenge of Going Solo

After I came home, I knew I needed to continue the structure not just for my own sanity but also whenever I had to step away from the baby and let another attendant take charge. So, I ordered a big chart and had my husband hang it up on a wall and that became my manual registry for the next three months until I’d gotten some hang of motherhood.

When I was preparing for my second child, I knew the expectation. I would have to go from being a surgery patient to the personal assistant of the baby within a matter of minutes and also ace the record-keeping for my own stability. The only hiccup this time was the world was only just coming out of lockdown, many countries still had restricted borders, and so my mother couldn’t fly over to me to help streamline the system.

Here is where I want to thank the social media algorithm from the bottom of my heart. I started ranting to my friends about how it would be so hard to physically get up post-surgery and update the manual chart or keep renewing the notes in my phone especially since my husband would be busy tackling the older child, when the algorithm finally came through with an ad of ‘Talli: The best baby tracker’.

Reconditioned Talli Baby One-Touch Tracker

Reconditioned Talli baby trackers are trackers that have been returned due to families’ circumstances changing or devices that were not sold at full price due to a slight scratch on the exterior. Reconditioned trackers include pre-printed buttons with the 8-default Talli Baby Events (Bottle, Solid Food, Diapers #1 & 2, Sleep, Nursing, Pumping & Miscellaneous).

My Review Of Talli Baby Tracker

Anything that would help keep me organized and on top of the baby management was welcome and so after a quick review of the product, I purchased it. A few weeks later our little bundle arrived and right from the hospital bed, the gadget took on some of the role that my mother had during my first delivery – albeit without her warmth.

East to Use Interface:

Talli Baby device is simple in both design and usage. Shaped like a box it has 8 buttons, each identified with a graphic representing the function you can record. They are divided into ‘Bottle, Solid Food, Wet Diaper, Dirty Diaper, Sleep timer, nursing timer, Pumping Timer and Misc. Option,’ Based off of the previous manner in which I was keeping track, this had a wider variety of options in a much more efficient manner.

Convenient Size:

The product is designed keeping convenience in mind. Not too bulky to use, it comes with a mount that can be installed on the nursery door, by the changing station, or even in your own bedroom if you prefer to co-sleep. It can also be removed from the mount and carried around the house or to a separate house in case you plan on leaving the child with a babysitter at another location.

Compatible with Alexa:

Perhaps one of my favorite features of Talli Baby Tracker was the ease with which I could log in, including my voice, and pairing it up with Alexa was a fun feature to explore. Not only did I simply remind Alexa I’d changed the diaper, but Alexa returned the favor by reminding me when the time to pump was.

Handy Button Size:

Any mom or caregiver of a baby will confidently attest that there are times when having two hands falls short. Having a newborn baby is one of those times. You are juggling a baby, bottles, feeders, diapers, post-diaper change dirty hands, almost all of the time. The buttons on the Talli Baby device are big enough that even if your hands are occupied and your device isn’t synced with Alexa, you can still punch the details in by pressing it with an elbow.

Customizable Misc. button:

Despite the 7 buttons to record basic functions, there is also a misc button that can be customized based on the parent’s specific need such as what the contents of food your baby ate or how long they did tummy time for in a particular session, or if they were given a massage.

Battery Run:

The Talli Baby Tracker is battery run which makes it possible for it to be portable without having to worry about the hassle of recharging it all the time. There is still an option to power it through a micro USB in case you want to extend the battery life, but a new set of batteries is good enough to last you 3-4 months at least.

Talli Baby Tracker Price

The product is priced at $100 and is available only from the Tally website. The company also sells reconditioned devices at the reduced rate of $70, promising that the refurbished device works as well as the new one.

If you’re a mother that likes being on top of her game, who likes staying organized, and most importantly who feels the need to keep a proper track record of all of the child’s activities to oversee how caregivers are dealing with them or for medical purposes, this is literally a one-touch product that can offer almost an answer to almost all of your organizational needs with a free iOs and Android compatible app, taking the game of convenience with productivity to a whole new level.
