Sense-U Smart Baby Abdominal Movement Monitor
There’s never a right time to become a parent. You can have a kid early on in your
relationship, or after years of marriage – the level of preparation is almost always going to
be not enough. Once the little child arrives, your entire perspective and outlook on life,
parenting, safety, the world, the environment, politics – almost everything is going to
change in one instance.
Of course, I’d heard all of these many times before. And like all know it all’s, I was certain I
was going to take notes from everyone’s advice, be more prepared than anything else and
ace parenting. And like everyone else, I too had no idea what emotions were about to hit
me the hardest. The first being the fear.
There were a lot of things I expected to happen as soon as I gave birth. The doctor joyfully
announcing it’s a boy, my husband excited to cut the umbilical cord. The nurse commenting
on his nose. The photographer I had hired for my delivery to keep moving around grabbing
these precious moments. I was even mentally prepared for if there was an issue with natural
delivery and I may have to go for an emergency cesarian. I thought I had played and played
every single scenario in my head thousands of times and knew plan a from plan b to plan c
on the back of my hand. And As fate’s first lesson in parenting – none of these were going to
matter. I had thought of every single scenario except the one that actually played out – my
son didn’t cry.
I couldn’t understand that moment of panic. The doctor’s expression changing, the
pediatrician charging in to hold him and flip him over, the dead silence of the nurses, the
confusion on my husband’s face – it felt like those first few seconds happened in slow
motion, all of them together. Fate was kind – it came a few seconds late but his first cries, in
that tense room, were music to everyone’s ears. We then proceeded naturally. Skin to skin.
The first feed. The pictures. The clutching of the fingers.
It felt like a daze. And at the back of my mind, a fear had settled. A sudden and frightful
realization of how fragile this little life is and how in that moment I was blessed to be
surrounded by doctors and trained staff who intervened and saved my baby, but what if
they weren’t around?
As a new mother we are already overwhelmed, our emotions are out of control and we
willingly partake in the social experiment of proving how its possible to function without
sleep for days on end. In my case, I also became paranoid about safety. The internet in such
situations is not a nice place to be on and between my anxious googling about the lack of
crying to learning about SIDS, I felt like despite my body screaming for sleep, the cortisol in
my system ensured I couldn’t grab 5 seconds of shut eye because I was obsessively hovering
over the crib.
My Mexican sister-in-law, God bless her, decided after 4 days it was time to stage an
intervention. She gently stroked my hand, listened to me ugly cry out of fear and yell at my
husband for stepping away for five seconds while I had napped from exhaustion, and kindly
recommended that why don’t we get a sleep monitor? A what? The suggestion completely
took me by surprise because I hadn’t even heard of this thing. We had a regular baby monitor but after the initial scare I had decided not put the baby in the nursery and instead
brought his crib to my bedroom.
As she steadily told me, By using a sleep tracker, parents can determine when their baby has
difficulty settling down and identify potential sleep issues. Additionally, a sleep tracker can
help parents determine the ideal sleep environment for their baby, such as the right amount
of light, noise, and temperature. And some, as she had seen her friends used, also had alerts
for emergencies.
My husband who was also listening, sat down the same moment and started finding one
online. This was a no brainer for him. Anything to help me calm down, while simultaneously
ensuring the baby’s health and safety. He found two, and Amazon primed both.
Tracks Abdominal Movements in Real Time:
As soon as they arrived, I opened both and started going over the manual and details. One
of them was the Sense-U Smart Baby Monitor that offered real time notifications of the
babys abdominal movements. This was essentially a small decive that could be attached to
the child’s diaper and it tracked the baby’s movement to ensure they don’t roll over on their
stomachs even by accident, it also tracked temperature and most of all it had a safety
feature where parents would be alerted within 15 seconds if the device didn’t observe
abdominal movement such as breathing. Between the two devices, the Smart- U Baby
Monitor was the one that offered 15 seconds of alert time. This is what I decided to go with
first. This was unlike what traditional sleep monitors are because in those you can see the
baby, in many even hear the baby, but you don’t get real time data of the baby’s breathing
movement. This for me was a game changer because after testing it out on my husband and
the baby at least six times before deciding to rely on it entirely, I felt like I finally got sleep
for the first time since the delivery.
Rollover notification:
As a sleep tracker, it also had the alert for notifying when a baby rolls over on the stomach
to avoid accidental suffocation or threat of SIDS. Although most babies a few days old don’t
have the ability to roll over it but having the device attached was an additional safety layer
to ensure no accidents happen.
Temperature Tracker:
The Sense-U smart baby monitor was equipped to track the temperature the baby was
feeling at the moment. This can provide insight into the baby’s sleep cycle which we used in
the later months or during leaps to create a more structured sleep routine. By knowing if
the child is feeling too hot or too cold, we avoided a fussy baby by ensuring the tyke got the
right amount of quality sleep. And his quality sleep was directly proportional to my sleep
and consequently sanity.
Low Emission:
One of my first concerns when I realized the sleep tracker is essentially always going to be
touching the baby’s skin, was about the level of radiation the gadget may omit. The device
was paired with the house wifi and I was feeling on the fence if the device was going to be
acting as a router. But thankfully the Baby Monitor uses Bluetooth Low energy which has almost zero percent radiation, making it a gentle and less harmful option for the child’s skin
and long term health.
Battery Powered:
The plastic device was powered by batteries and didn’t require charging. This eliminated the
need to repeatedly remove the product for longer periods of time for charging purposes
during which otherwise parents would have to rely on traditional monitors or miss out on
sleep data. The batteries gave us a decent three and a half to four week run time and
changing them was also convenient. While I tended to changing the baby’s diaper, my
husband utilized the time by putting in a fresh pair of batteries.
The biggest different getting the Sense-U smart baby monitor and sleep tracker did was that
I felt I could finally let my paranoid brain relax and get some proper sleep. The device came
with a compatible app, easily installed on my life and with loud loud alerts to ensure that
even if something was to go wrong and I was unavailable for one reason or another, there
would be another caregiver at all times who would be notified in real time about any
imminent danger or health concern and could then notify or alert the parents.
Our son is now going onto one year, and even though I’m not using the gadget daily, its still
something I always reach for whenever the baby is sick or post immunizations, not simply
for the baby’s safety but also for my own peace of mind.
